Port San Luis to Pecho Rock
May 19 2009, 12:03 PM EDT
On Sunday 5/17 Kat and I launched at 9:30 from Old Port Beach to paddle up the coast to Pecho Rock. It was pretty foggy out past the breakwater so we stayed close to shore where we could see some landmarks. It was peaceful and quiet with small swells as we paddled past the lighthouse. A short distance beyond the lighthouse, we heard a familiar "whush" and saw the spout of a whale. A grey whale surfaced off to our left before diving back down. This whale, maybe others, accompanied us pretty much all the way to Pecho Rock (the big rock before the Diablo 1 mile security zone). The last time he surfaced he came up between us and startled the heck out of us he was so close! We got to Pecho and hung out in the "breathing" kelp bed before we turned around and headed for a beach along the bluffs that looked like we could land there. It was a deep water cove with reefs extending out either end of it and we landed to have lunch. What a pristine beach it was and what cool tidepools! We felt like it was "our" beach as there were no signs of any other visitors having been there :-)We relaunched for the return trip and with the swell behind us we made quick time getting back to the lighthouse. Just before the lighthouse our whale showed up one more time as if he was saying "see ya" to us. We rounded the breakwater into the bay and about that time the wind picked up blowing off our left quarter. Unfortunately my skeg was stuck so it was a longish 1 mile back to Old Port with that stiff breeze pushing out my stern. Kat had an awesome landing, surfing her Looksha in like a pro! We landed about 2:30 tired, but happy. The entire trip was a bit over 12 miles. Do you find this valuable?

It was an awsome paddle. Even the wind at the end was worth it to be so close to such a magnificent creature!
