FOG (Part 4)

. A big ocean swell was pounding the jetty and the spray was coming down like rain and drenching us on the protected side. We went out to the buoy and caught some swells, and then explored the piers. Sometimes the light wind would completely die and the water would be like glass. Since I was several boat lengths ahead of Bob I challenged him to a race by taking off like a lunatic, grunting with every stroke and not letting up. My forehead was dripping in sweat and my muscles were screaming in pain but I kept going. I could see Bobs kayak in the corner of my eye, it was surging ahead with every stroke just like in the Olympics. I needed more speed so I tried paddling and rowing at the same time. I leaned my kayak over on it’s side to make the water line longer and try to increase speed but it was no use, he caught me and passed. I expired in exhaustion, laughing like a school kid. It was a great day and that evening Bob was telling everyone how he saw his first sea otter! He also talked about hearing the pelicans in Morro Bay diving into the water and the group of seals that came up out of the water right in front of his kayak! He said it was a lot of fun exploring Morro Bay and he enjoyed the excitement of Avila. Not bad for a day of paddling I’d say! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Sounds like you and Bob had a great time! I admire you guys going out in the fog. That thick stuff creeps me out and I avoid it like the plague. Must have been an eerie paddle. Good on you guys for persevering though and finding sunshine at Avila. Bob'll just have to come back again to kayak the Bay and Cayucos! Do you find this valuable?
