San Luis Bay Paddle
Oct 16 2008, 4:46 PM EDT
I couldn't pass up this magnificent weather today so I put in at Old Port at 8:30 and headed towards Shell Beach. A group of dolphins kept me company as I paddled along the coastline, but otherwise it was just me and the sound of the surf. It was beautiful. There wasn't much swell, but the tide was so high the waves were still crashing against the bluffs. There wasn't much sand left to land on at Shell so I kept going to the little beach below the hotel amongst Dinosaur Caves and stopped for a snack. My dolphin buddies splashed around for a bit and then continued on towards Pismo. I put back in at 10:40 and having tired of the kelp, set my bow on the breakwater and made a beeline for it. This time the sea lions kept me company along the way. The wind just started to blow a bit as I neared Coast Guard Beach at the breakwater where I stopped for lunch at noon. There was so much water sloshing around that the water wasn't breaking over the jetty, but lapping over it. It was like an overfilled bathtub out there. I landed back at Old Port at 12:40 where I met a nice lady who told me she has an "umniak" from Alaska. I'm not sure what this is, but she said my Tern reminded her of it. I am so pleased I got out before this lovely Fall weather deserts us. Now I just have to figure out how to explain to my boss how I got so much color on my face and arms today! Tell your boss you've been placed on antibiotics that are photosensitive! Sounds like you had an absolutely awesome day out there! You'll have to show me the differences between river & ocean paddling before long :-D

I'm loving all this positive support :-) You guys are great! It helps alleviate the guilt. I'll remember the bit about "photosensitive antibiotics"--too funny.Victor, Kathy S. and I are up for paddling MB-Cayucos. Looks like the winds will be down for it--yay! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Oh Tiff,I forgot to add, an UMIAK is an Eskimo SKIN & FRAME Kayak. The Indigeonous folks built them super light and very sea worthy. Perception named one of their kayaks UMIAK designed for smaller people & kids a while back. It was a kayak designed to help keep up with the larger and longer kayaks. A smaller version of the Shadow or Eclipse. The indiginous kayak probably weighed in well under 35 lbs..... So now you know the rest of the story........ There is a man up in the Oakland area that teaches how to build them as well as the Greenland skin kayak. And they are built to fit......really fit. There is no adjusting. One size fits one.....! See ya tomorrow, Victor 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
