Old Port and Shell 24 August
Aug 24 2008, 8:44 PM EDT
Wow, what an absolutely splendid day to be on the water! Kathy and I were going to surf our skis, but that entailed an earlier start than either of us wished to do so instead we launched the kayaks from Old Port about 9:45 under high overcast and some slight wind. As we paddled towards Fossil Point, the wind died, the marine layer thickened, and the ocean glassed off. On the beach before we launched, Gary told us to keep an eye out for jellyfish. It wasn't long before we started seeing them. They ranged in size from dinner plate to beach ball and were pinkish in color--very pretty. There were lots of otters, seals, sea lions, and elegant terns out and about with their youngsters. We landed at Shell at the cove there for a short break. When we re-launched it was into a stiffish breeze and wind waves that continued almost back to Fossil Point before settling out a bit. We landed back at Old Port around 1:45 for a round trip distance of 9 miles. A nice gentleman landed after us in an SOT kayak with a sail and mini pontoons so we visited with him a bit. By then it had warmed up considerably so we headed to Fat Cat's for a late lunch and walked the pier to see the sea lion antics. It was a lovely day! Thanks, Kat! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
