Shell Beach to White Rock 3 July
Jul 3 2008, 8:48 PM EDT
Gary and I had a pleasant paddle today. We launched at Shell about 9 am and paddled around the rock that's straight off from the stairs (does anyone know it's name?) and then headed towards White Rock over by Pirate's Cove. Along the way, there were a whole bunch of these little fish shooshing across the water. We saw some of them alongside the kelp--they're long and skinny and silvery, sort of like a cigar only bigger. Gary thought they might be smelt, but does anyone know for sure? The swell was doing funny things along the way. Short period stuff and then in some areas it was smooth like glass. We rounded White Rock and saw 2 very young sea lions basking on it along with all the cormorants and some gulls. On our way back towards Shell, we could see white caps off towards the horizon. It was sort or neat to watch as they got closer and closer, and the swell got shorter and higher. The whole wind thing on the ocean interests me. How very peculiar that you can watch it come towards you as if it's a traveler. I used to think of weather and conditions as something that is, not something that you can watch develop and approach. We landed about noon and we were glad we did as by the time we got there, the traveling wind had caught up to us. Do you find this valuable?
