Pismo to Old Port in my Tern

So it's not the Catalina crossing, but I feel good that I did this paddle solo in my Tern today 1 July. This is the first time I've been out alone in my Tern on the ocean (I don't count when I went out to Port San Luis). I think it's 6 miles and I did it in 1 3/4 hrs. with a 10 minute rest stop in the kelp.

The launch at Pismo (8:45 am) was easy because the waves were so small. There was a bit of a breeze and this little choppy swell until I got to Shell Beach. I couldn't tell you what I passed on the way to Shell as I was a bit nervous and was windmill paddling (Kathy would have recognized this from San Simeon!) with my sights firmly set on the rocks there. A whale could have breached next to me and I don't think I would have noticed. I didn't hug the coast, but instead set as straight a line as I could for my 1st leg.

By the time I got to Shell Beach I had forced myself to relax. I kept reminding myself that I knew how to
self-rescue 2 different ways from my lessons with Tom.

From Shell to Old Port was a completely different paddle. The wind was less and the swell somehow disappeared for the most part. I paddled straight towards Fossil Point and paid more attention to what I was passing. Once I got to Fossil Point, I rested in the kelp. While I was there, a harbor seal came up next to me and scared the heck out of itself. Between the 2 piers a whole bunch of little fish were jumping all over the place as I paddled through them. I landed at Old Port (10:30 am) sort of disappointed that my paddle was over and called Doug to pick me up.

My Tern handled everything beautifully and I have a ton more confidence in my boat and me after today. My sweet man did a wonderful job on my custom built kayak.

So as I alluded before, not a big deal for most closed deck paddlers, but a milestone for me anyways.

Thanks for reading!

Tiffany

Congratulations Tiffany! It really is an accomplishment. We were paddling from old port to shell today. We left old port around 9 and headed to coastguard beach, then we did the breakwater to fossil point getting there around 11:30. we played a lot on the way. I am sad that we didn't see you. Corky came and he wanted to see your boat, and it would have been in the water. It was a great day to be on the water. The wind didn't fill in until 2 or so at shell. maybe next time we can paddle that route. You can go back to pismo next time and make it a round trip.

keep paddling:)

Thanks, Tom, that makes me feel good!

Shoot, I'm bummed I didn't see you guys. And didn't get to show off my boat :-) You're reading my mind though, next time it'll be a round trip for sure.
