MDO to Pt. San Luis!
Dec 20 2007, 6:42 PM EST
My number one wished for paddle got underway about 9:30 on 16 December 2007 thanks to the 3 experienced paddlers--Tom, Corky, and John--and our shuttle provided by Paul from CCK. We launched from Spooner's Cove and I kept a wary eye on the big waves crashing to the left of the cove mouth. There wasn't any wind and it was a might chilly to start, but it warmed up quickly. We kept away from the sneaky waves that would break seemingly in the middle of nowhere hundreds of yards from the bluffs. I doubt the guys would have minded being around them, but my skills aren't good enough to deal with those sort of situations. We headed towards a big, green buoy which would give us a reference for keeping the required one mile distance away from the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. Along the way, we saw a very cool creature. It may have been a pelagic tunicate or perhaps a siphonophore; either way, it was a neato discovery. The buoy was covered with sea lions including a big male who wanted us nowhere near his harem. We continued on until a lunch break directly across from Diablo. The hills and bluffs along the coast there are just spectacular and I couldn't get enough of looking at them. The next landmark towards which we paddled was Pecho Rock. It was along about there that I started noticing the swell coming up behind me. That was a sight to see--they were like moving water mountains. It was also about then that I was sure my arms were going to secede from the rest of my body. We pushed on past the lighthouse towards the breakwater. Around the breakwater we went and onto Old Port beach at about 3:00. The guys in their sea kayaks would have done it a lot faster, but they graciously kept to a slower pace for me. It was an amazingly beautiful paddle and a very surreal feeling being out in the midst of all that water. I had been wanting to do this for ages and I thank the guys for letting me come along with them. A trip of a lifetime for me! 4  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

Sounds like a great trip. I just purchased my first Kayak today, from C.C.K and am VERY excited to get out there.I have no one to Kayak with yet, (am pretty new to the Central Coast) so I am a little nervous about going out there on my own, but I am determined!!
Today I am practicing getting the kayak on and off of my vehicle :>)
