I want to thank the paddlers that came out for the two classes taught by Sean Morley. Doug, Ron, Tiffany and Kat. You guys looked awesome during the forward stroke clinic and got to put all of that to good use in the afternoon rough water/rescue class. The weather was great and we paddled out beyond the breakwater to find the wind and swell. I haven't seen such BIG eyes on paddlers in a long time. We went through the rocks between the breakwater and the large rock just outside with a 5-7' swell running and everyone did great.
The slide show afterward was also just as great. Tiffany, Doug, Kat and her husband Jim, really went above and beyond in getting treats and coffee. I was very inspired to become a better paddler after seeing what Sean has done. 6 months to go around all Great Britain and Ireland. Wow! the pics were amazing! Also the Vancouver trip was great. I will take Sean' s advice and spend some time to explore if I ever get up there.Big kudos to Paul at Central Coast Kayaks for finding the venue at the Shell beach Vets' hall. To see more of Sean's trips etc check out www.expedtionkayak.com let's do something like this again. Very cool. -t

Morro Bay has replaced the Fireworks with a laser show. I really enjoyed last year, but without the fireworks do we want to relocate?

This was a most awesome weekend for paddling! On Saturday, I was paddling south of Shell Beach and came upon 2 humpback whales feeding super close to shore! They were swimming all around my boat and put on quite the show. You can see a video I took of them on the "Videos" page here on the site. I apologize in advance for the unintended commentary--I was a little nervous when they got close to my boat.
Sunday, Doug, Hans, and I paddled at Santa Margarita Lake and I saw a little brown bear. He was very cute and was right on the water's edge until he got spooked and went up into the trees and brush. The lake is pretty as ever, but gosh, the water is way, way low so a lot of the coves aren't accessible anymore. It was a fabulous paddling weekend and bodes well for the rest of summer!

Sean Morely will be coming down from San Francisco to teach a forward stroke clinic. Sean has been paddling for over 30 years and currently holds the speed record for going around vancouver island. He is also first in the world in surf kayaking.
We will have 8 slots open for the am class which is working on making your forward stroke easy, effective and efficient. The pm class will be on rough water handling and rescues. It will be a great time to test out your rescue techniques and learn safely with a great instructor in a low risk environment. $65 for each class or $120 for both. This morning class can be taken in either a sit on top or sit inside sea kayak. The afternoon is designed for sit in side sea kayaks with bulkheads but will consider sit on tops. Please call Paul at Central Coast Kayaks to register. 773-3500 A slide show of Sean's journey around vancouver island will be saturday night at 7:30. (free) Location TBA. -tom

Hans, Kat and I got a nice early start this morning in our quest to practice for the Harmount. We launched from Old Port and were on the water by 8:30. Glassy, warm, beautiful conditions greeted us. We headed towards Pismo and saw lots of sea lions, otters, and a pod of dolphins along the way, but not the humpbacks that were out yesterday. There were a bunch of fisherman and they seemed to be successfully catching halibut. We reached the Silver Shoals area about 9:30 and noticed whitecaps out to sea. Hmmm, we thought. Perhaps we should head back in case that wind fills in. So we did. We paddled along the shore by Pirate's and Fossil Point and as we came past the Avila Pier on our way to Coast Guard Beach, the wind slammed into us. An evil, relentless head wind and wicked wind chop. Victory at Sea conditions! Everyone agreed to soldier on, but it was slow, slow going. Coast Guard Beach never looked so good when we all finally arrived there! Hans is getting interested in kayak fishing so after a snack he paddled out to talk to one of the fisherman who was in this unusual looking pontoon-raft thingy. Kat and I joined him a few minutes later and we made our way back towards Old Port. The wind was pushing us sideways something fierce as we paddled/blew under the pier. Once we were headed to the beach however, it was behind us and made the going quick. We landed about 12:30 and loaded up. Our total distance was just over 9 miles, but it sure felt like more after battling that wind!
We were foiled in this practice attempt, but we will be trying again . . .

Well, Tiff was recovering from a nasty bug and wasn't able to paddle this weekend (you know Tiff is sick when there's a whole week goes by and she's not on the water!) I was ready to paddle so I asked Tiff what she thought the conditions would allow me to do on my own. She had several suggestions, most of which we had paddled before (together), but she mentioned Spooners Cove to the Rock. This sounded like a decent paddle to me so Spooners to the Rock it was! Suddenly the emails started. "Are you SURE you want to do this as your first paddle alone? How about something closer?" No. My mind was made up. With strict instructions to Call Tiff immediately upon landing at the Rock, I launched from Spooners at around 9am. There were several fisherpeople and a couple of divers getting ready to take off and the morning was cold, damp and overcast. There was a slight wind but the water was lapping up on the beach, no surf launch needed! I headed out the Cove, turned right and no compass was necessary. The Rock was dead ahead! I stayed about 1/2 mile or so offshore because this was unfamiliar to me and breaking waves make me nervous. Other than a few curious seals and otters I was completely alone. The water was a little choppy but the swell was tiny so I had no problems.
I landed on the beach at the Rock at about 11.15 and immediately phoned Tiff to let her know I got there safe. I said that I’d be heading back soon and I’d call again by 2pm.

If anyone would like to practice paddling the Harmount route with Kat and me, we'll be meeting at Old Port at 8 on Sunday the 7th. We won't be landing at Pismo, but rather, turning around and possibly landing at Shell for a lunch break before winding up back at Old Port. We aren't racers so anyone who would like to come along is welcome! Post reply here if you have questions.

As I launched from the rock, I had to wait a few minutes for a handful of sailboats that were headed out the harbor. The trip back was about the same. The seals and otters were curious as ever. When I landed at Spooners at 1.40, I realized that I had told Tiff that I’d check in by 2pm. Eek! If I don’t check in on time, the Coast Guard will be alerted! There is no cell coverage at MDO. What to do?? I hauled the Looksha up the beach and got her loaded lickety split. No time to change, just hop in the car wetsuit, paddle jacket, booties and all. By the time I crested the top of MDO and was in cell range I placed the call with not a minute to spare. I checked in at 2pm on the dot! No Coast Guard needed! Yeah! My first trip out all alone. No adult supervision. I success I’d say :>)

Sean will hopefully be presenting a slide show of his World Record trip around Vancouver Island British Columbia Canada he did last year in only 16 Days!. He also came in first place at the world surf kayaking championship a little over a year ago. I have also asked him to offer class for either sea kayaking or surf kayaking. Would anyone be interested? Which class would you like to take? It would be saturday June 27th. He is also one hell of a nice guy! post a reply here if interested and cost should be less than $100 for 4-6 hrs of class. the slide show will be free. I am working on a venue to host it. any ideas?

Hi all. I'm Lee and I just joined this group. I am a novice paddler who has been on Morro Bay twice, but finally pulled the trigger and bought my first SOT and now I'm ready to venture out with it. As I'm new to this, I could use some advice on what to wear to be comfortable. It is confusing to know if I need a wetsuit, wetshorts, a paddle jacket or what. Also where the good spots are for a beginner to learn skills other than the Bay. I live in Buellton so I'd eventually like to paddle El Cap to Refugio and back, and Avila sounds nice also. I'm 54, so I'm not fast by any means. I'm also looking to paddle with others to have fun and learn more about this activity. Thanks, and looking forward to paddling with you.

On Sunday 5/17 Kat and I launched at 9:30 from Old Port Beach to paddle up the coast to Pecho Rock. It was pretty foggy out past the breakwater so we stayed close to shore where we could see some landmarks. It was peaceful and quiet with small swells as we paddled past the lighthouse. A short distance beyond the lighthouse, we heard a familiar "whush" and saw the spout of a whale. A grey whale surfaced off to our left before diving back down. This whale, maybe others, accompanied us pretty much all the way to Pecho Rock (the big rock before the Diablo 1 mile security zone). The last time he surfaced he came up between us and startled the heck out of us he was so close! We got to Pecho and hung out in the "breathing" kelp bed before we turned around and headed for a beach along the bluffs that looked like we could land there. It was a deep water cove with reefs extending out either end of it and we landed to have lunch. What a pristine beach it was and what cool tidepools! We felt like it was "our" beach as there were no signs of any other visitors having been there :-)
We relaunched for the return trip and with the swell behind us we made quick time getting back to the lighthouse. Just before the lighthouse our whale showed up one more time as if he was saying "see ya" to us. We rounded the breakwater into the bay and about that time the wind picked up blowing off our left quarter. Unfortunately my skeg was stuck so it was a longish 1 mile back to Old Port with that stiff breeze pushing out my stern. Kat had an awesome landing, surfing her Looksha in like a pro! We landed about 2:30 tired, but happy. The entire trip was a bit over 12 miles.

Kat and I are going to go out from Old Port or Fisherman's on Sunday and if the swell cooperates by staying low, we'll head west around the breakwater to explore the beaches along the coast there. This trip will involve surf landings and launches. I will post firmer details of place and time as it gets closer. If you'd like to come and have questions, reply here.
