This is a beginner class for folks interested in learning how to paddle a closed deck sea kayak. Paddle strokes, launching and landing in small surf, wet exits, deep water re-entries, and more will be explored in this class. Kat and I used the guide services of Sean Morley owner of River and Ocean for a spectacular weekend of paddling. He had guided us before on an earlier trip out the Golden Gate and up the Marin Headlands and we had a fantastic time so we went up for some more. On Saturday, under clear blue skies, we launched from Nick's Cove and paddled the western edge of beautiful Tomales Bay towards its mouth. The hope was to round the point out to the Pacific, but the surf was breaking across the mouth with an ebbing tide so the decision was made to land and hike over the ridge to have lunch overlooking the ocean. It was gorgeous and the views were awesome. We got to see the tule elk herd that makes its home on the preserve. We paddled back passing Walker Creek along the way and admired the flock of white pelicans there. On Sunday, under rainy skies, we drove to Drake's Beach and launched from there to paddle around Chimney Rock and up towards the Pt. Reyes Light. The sea was somewhat big and the wind chaotic which made for some challenging paddling, but the cliffs along Pt. Reyes are stunningly beautiful. It was the prettiest and most dramatic coastline I've ever paddled along. We stopped just short of the lighthouse and headed back with a following sea making the distance go by quickly. Elephant seals had taken up nearly all the beaches, but we found a small one to have a quick lunch on and then it was back along the tall bluffs of Drake's Bay into a stiff headwind towards the beach. We landed spent, but happy. It was a glorious weekend of paddling.

This class is for anyone interested in getting on and off the beach right side up in a kayak. We will be working on strategies to get out through surf, coming back in, what to do if you get sideways, timing, learning about waves, etc. Call Central Coast kayaks if you are interested. 805-773-3500. Hi. I've never launched from here before and was thinking of coming up this Saturday to check it out. I've only paddled in Morro Bay and Lopez Lake, and this will be my first sheltered ocean paddle. Any tips on launching from the ramp as far as procedure goes? Is parking on Saturday close to the ramp difficult? Is this a busy ramp? I'll be by myself so it will take a little time to unload my boat , get it on the sand, and get my car off the ramp. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Beautiful boat, Victor! You must be way stoked! Can we see a picture of it closer up? I'll have to google this Norwegian kayak--I haven't heard of them before. You must have had the serious gimmes for this :-)

A snip from Victor...
The race yesterday was awesome. The water started out calm and within 15 minutes the sea became very windy, choppy and swells were 6 /7 feet. Kayaking in Morro Bay
Victor, Jen and I went paddling on Saturday in Morro Bay. If anyone is interested, I am teaching a surf zone class for Central Coast Kayaks on November15, sunday. If you ever wanted to learn how to get out and in through the surfzone, this is the class for you. Boat type does not matter, Sit-on-top or Closed deck boat. Skills we will be working on will be what to look for when launching, Strokes to get you out, How to keep you boat on course through the surf, Timing, getting back to the beach right side up :), using the back of the wave when landing, choosing the right landing spot and lots more. You should know Strokes: forward, reverse, forward sweep, reverse sweep; how to exit your boat in deep water and re-entry, have spent some time paddling. Rental boats and equipment is included in the price.
The class will be from 9am-1pm. We will be at Fisherman's beach in Avila. The surf is small there and we can always find bigger surf if needed. Cost is $65/per person. Contact CCK at 805-773-3500 to sign up. If you have more questions, please post here on CCPN. Have fun and be safe! -tom

Yesterday I signed up to kayak the Colorado River from the Topock Gorge to Lake Havasu. I'm joining a group of kayakers from California Kayak Friends. They're based around Ventura.

This last saturday there were over 20 competitors on waveskiis and surf kayaks earning points for the USA west surf kayaking team. Great folks and fun surf.

Wow it was very cool to finally check this out. It was a traditional artic kayak symposium. That is boats built in the same tradition as greenland and aleuts of the artic region. These boats have a wooden frame and fabric skin. Each boat is built by hand and designed for each person, like a custom suit. I heard that Victor went up on Friday and took some cool shots. I am bummed I did not see them on the water. I also heard that Corky made it up there and got in a boat.
Please let me know if you are interested in a greenland paddle building workshop or a boat building workshop. I am very motivated to make this happen. We would need 6 people ot make this work. contact me if you are interested. Maybe over xmas break or after the new year. -tom

For those interested, On Saturday and Sunday at the Pismo Pier there will be a surf kayak and waveski competition being held during the Clam Festival.
Also this weekend, the Traditional Arctic Kayak Symposium is being held at San Simeon. There will be classes and and clinics and a chance to see authentic skin on frame kayaks on the beach there. Cool stuff to check out.

Hi all :) My wife and I are new to kayaking, and having been cruising around Morro Bay Harbor a few times. We really like it alot and are thinking of purchasing a couple of kayaks to enjoy the sport more, in various locations. We tried out a sit on top model of kayak, and found the seating to be very hard on our backs. After a couple of hours we were through! But we rented a couple of sit in side singles and we really enjoyed it much much more. The problem is that after reading about self rescue I dont know if my wife would be able to do a self rescue. I coulld help her but she is weak righ now in upper body strength.
so we are looking for recommendations from people who are in the sport. We dont have alot of cash for an inital output, and are loking at a 12 foot Manatee kayak from LL bean or maybe if we hear there are ways to make a sit on top comfortable, trying something like that. Please let me know what you think...experience is something I would like to have the benefit of when making a decision. tell me your tales, likes and dislikes. So you know, my wife is about 5 ft 5, and is not a petite little lady. Shes not huge, but she would kill me for posting her weight on here! I am 5, 10, weigh 230 and have ok strength. I know i could pull of a self rescue if needed, but hope to never have too. We also have a 12 year old son who would like to get into the sport with us, but we would like to get him a kayak to grow into, eventually. So let me know what you think and what kind of recomendations you would have. We like to paddle the bay, and would like to try out some lakes here locally too.
